EPP components for heat pump radiators ensure efficient air flow, lightweight construction and high energy efficiency

Modern heat pump radiators place high demands on air flow, energy efficiency and compact designs. EPP components offer optimum conditions for this. They are lightweight, insulating and dimensionally stable. In the following project example, we show how we have implemented these advantages in the PowerKon LT from Kampmann.

Modern heat pump radiators in use

Homeowners who want to replace their existing heating system with a heat pump, as well as builders who are planning their new build with sustainable air conditioning technology, install new, economical heating and cooling appliances in the rooms. The efficient operation of radiators stands and falls with the temperature of the heating water. The appliances must therefore be able to deliver high performance with low water temperatures. Heat pump radiators fully meet these requirements; even when connected to a low-temperature system, which has a flow temperature of only around 35°C, the room quickly becomes pleasantly warm. The heat pump radiator can also make use of the heat pump’s cooling function, which is particularly useful in summer. To do this, the appliance is supplied with cold water from the heat pump. A heat pump radiator increases the efficiency of the heat pump by up to 35% (compared to a high-temperature system with approx. 50°C), the energy requirement is lower and costs can be saved.

Alternative to underfloor heating

Does a heat pump only work at home in combination with underfloor heating? This is a myth that is no longer true. Heat pump radiators, also known as fan-assisted radiators or low-temperature radiators, are an equal alternative to underfloor heating. On the one hand, heat pump radiators are much more responsive than conventional underfloor heating, and on the other hand, when switching from an existing heating system, you don’t have to chisel up the entire floor to install them, as the existing pipework can be used for heat pump radiators.

Advantages of EPP in heat pump radiators:

  • Optimum air flow and thermal insulation
  • Low sound pressure level
  • Low weight and easy installation
  • Sustainable, recyclable material

The interior of the “PowerKon LT” heat pump radiator from our long-standing customer Kampmann is made entirely of expanded polypropylene (EPP) from RUCH NOVAPLAST. The dimensionally stable EPP components reliably hold the individual components in place and enable precise, flow-optimized air routing. As a result, the air is directed through the appliance in a controlled and efficient manner, which is a key factor in the high performance of the system.

Even at maximum air volumes, the operates at a very low sound pressure level of only approx. 20-40db and thus remains barely audible. As the particle foam consists of 95% air, it is particularly light. This significantly reduces the overall weight of the device and makes it easier to install on site.

In addition, EPP has an insulating effect, which promotes energy conservation, enables energy-efficient working and thus also increases the efficiency of the entire appliance.

As the particle foam is fully recyclable, the heat pump radiator not only impresses with its quiet and lightweight design, but also with its high level of sustainability.
